The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Division of Family and Child Health, Bureau of Early Intervention (NYC BEI) is launching a free training entitled Assistive Technology through the NYC Early Intervention Program: A How-To for Assessment, Equipment Request and Selection, and Follow-Up on its on-line Learning Management System (LMS). The LMS is accessible via computers and mobile devices.
This training is intended to support motor therapists in making decisions regarding the selection and use of assistive technology devices, particularly Durable Medical Equipment (DME), to promote the functional outcomes in a child’s Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). Short video clips are embedded within the 6 modules of this training course. Topics covered include:
EI policies and the definition of assistive technology for the Early Intervention Program Initial needs assessment of a child birth -3. Horizontal developmental positions of supine, prone, side lying and quadruped, sitting, standing and walking, mobility and play
The training offers 6 contact hours for motor therapists including physical therapists (PTs), physical therapy assistants (PTAs), occupational therapists (OTs) and certified occupational therapy assistants (COTAs). This training may also be used toward the ten (10) hours of training required annually by the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Early Intervention EI Provider Agreement.
